How do you bring a starving dog back to health?

Ok, first off, our dog hasent been eating for about 2 weeks. We originally thought it was the other dogs eating her food, so we brought her into the house to eat, but she didnt. She started losing weight, and energy, almost immediately. My parents tried different things but were unsuccessful. So I intervened, cause its not my dog but I dont want her die. We had BBQ hotdogs tonight, and there was 4 left over. Without anyone knowing, I tested a couple things. I brought out hotdogs, pizza, and a bowl of dog food. She ate the hotdogs and pizza without thinking. But, the dog food she wont even touch. Which I originally suspected cause of the lawsuit that was recently started.

Basically, she looks really bad, hips showing and all that. They were going to put her down tomorrow, but I got her to eat. Now, being half educated, I know that when somethings starving, the last thing you do is feed it a whole bunch. So, how do I bring her back to health?
Shes a full size poodle, and shes 15. Though she acted young, until recently. Do you feed her a little bit 5 times a day, or, medium amount 2 times, or, start off with a little bit frequently and increase. Or what?

Bauser answers:

Feed her a little bit a few times a day, five times at the most, try adding water to her food or a little bit of broth. She still needs to see a vet there may be some other things causing this. Like cancer or organ failure, it may be her way of dying in peace.

Well, I just looked at your profile and answers, so I’m guessing that you are talking about VWD (von willibrands disease) in Dobermans. You would need to contact Vet Gen to do a DNA test. I believe(don’t quote me) that the ratio on breeding a Clear to a Carrier is that 50% of the litter will be carriers, and 50% will be clears. Why don’t you google Vet Gen and see if you can order the test. The old elisa tests are not very accurate. Hope I helped.

What are the health risks a dog in a shelter runs & for which I’ll have to check before bringing the dog home

I know nothing about dog diseases, I guess like cats, they’ll have certain vaccins and deworming every 6 months?
I’m going to the animal shelter tomorrow and I need to make sure I don’t end up with a dog who has health problems, for 2 reasons: obviously it means more money spending on vets and also, it’s heart breaking to have a pet who’s sick.
Is there a virus he could have? I have a cat at home so I don’t want to risk any contagious infection. Please help!

Bauser answers:

These are good answers, but you need to know a couple more things. There is a yearly vaccine called bordatella. Make sure your dog gets that when you take him/her for the yearly visit. It prevents kennel cough in case you are around other dogs, or take her to be groomed.
Adult dogs do not require de-worming unless you notice worms in the stool or she tests positive at your yearly exam.
Dogs get yearly vaccines, and monthly flea and heart worm prevention like frontline or advantage. Your vet can fill you in.
The adoption fee includes vet exam, but it wouldn’t hurt to take him/her to your regular vet right after adoption to make sure you are all on the same page.Shelter dogs and rescue dogs make the best pets. You will not be sorry for adopting.
Good luck!

Bauser answers:

DO IT! It is the best thing you can do. You’ll save like 80% on vet bills unless something is seriously wrong with your puppy and needs extra care. But for most dogs, the insurance covers everything. And usually it is on a per year basis, and the first year is the most expensive (besides the last years, but you don’t have to worry about that for a LONG LONG time). I have mine through Banfield, and I am so happy! Mine is only 20 bucks a month and was 144 for the start up. If I didn’t have it my bills would be at least 1k by now.

What to do about a sickly dog?

I have a 4 year old female jack russell who has had health problems ever since I got her as a pup.

She has dog hey fever which is problem enough but I have that under control quite well now.

I am more baffled by her general state of health. In the 4 years I have had her she has had several vet visits due to gastro problems, even got so sick she was on a drip for 3 days. She had a bout of Giardia about a year and half ago which really knocked her around.

She can have several good months in a row and will eat with gusto and have no problems and then she will have bouts of not eating and just feeling off for a few days. I know she isn’t eating anything that she shouldn’t. She isn’t the type of dog that will eat dead things in the garden either which I thought might cause her stomach upsets from time to time. I couldn’t even get pet insurance because of her past history with the gastro.

She looks very healthy, has a very shiny coat, good clear eyes, always is in play mode (except when she’s feeling sick). I feed her top quality dog food and she gets good quality treats too.
She sometimes get the runs if I feed her too many liver treats so I cut back on those. Sometimes she vomits after having her dinner for no reason at all and it’s the same thing that she ate the day before.

She just seems to be a very on and off sickly dog and I don’t know what more I can do to keep her well 100% of the time.

When she is sick I put her on a boiled chicken and rice diet for a few days and then back on her normal food when she’s feeling better.

Are some dogs just prone to having gastric problems?
Skipper, yes she could have come from a puppy mill. At the time I particularly wanted a tri colour female jack russell and found her in a pet store. She was exactly what I was looking for so I bought her on the day I saw her. Other than her health problems she is a beautiful dog, not the best behaved but I love her nonetheless. I didn’t even know about backyard breeding when I got her. Live and learn.

Bauser answers:

She probably came from a horrible breeder or Mill. Where did you get her?

Yes, some dogs are *just* prone to having health problems. Usually, the ones that are “prone” have something behind it.

Here’s all/most the JRT health probs- http://www.jack-russell-terrier-pictures.com/jackrussellterrierhealthproblems.html

ETA: Yup. That explains it. Pet Stores pups are always from Puppy Mills. Hope she gets better.

Should I keep my dog or return him to the shelter due to cost of vet bills?

I adopted a mixed dog from the Humane Society on May 20. I was told he was heartworm positive, but otherwise he was healthy. 2 days later my dog developed Kennel Cough and I found traces of intestinal worms in his stool. I took him to the vet and they charged me $231.51 to treat these problems and to do bloodwork for his upcoming heartworm treatment. I was told heartworm treatment would cost $600 to $1000, which is way more than I thought it would be. I had to wait for his cough to go away before scheduling his first heartworm treatment. When I took him in it cost $321.61 for part 1 of treatment, but in the x-rays a foreign object showed up. Now, I’ve been home with the dog constantly or he’s been in a crate so I doubt he swallowed something at my home. He was severely underweight when I took him home and he has had a lack of appetite since I got him. It’s been a struggle to get him to eat, sometimes I have to feed him by hand to get him interested. Now the vet says it’ll cost me $176 to bring him in and induce vomiting to see if the object will come up. If not, then the dog will need stomach surgery, plus his second part of heartworm treatment which will cost another $400. I don’t know how much surgery will cost.

I still have a week and a half to return the dog to the shelter and get a refund, return all of his belongings to Petco, and get a refund on the pet insurance that I bought but won’t cover because these conditions are pre-existing.

I was willing to cough up the $800 heartworm cost because even though I was mistaken about the cost (I thought it would be $200-$300) I knew that my dog had this problem. I am irritated about the other problems that the Humane Society didn’t tell me about, although they probably didn’t know cause he didn’t show any symptoms.

My mom and my fiance think I should return the dog since they think it’s ridiculous that I might have to pay for surgery. I’ve already spent $600 on vet bills and I really love the dog, so I don’t want to take him back. However, I only saved up enough money to get a dog and cover any minor health issues; I just graduated from college and I have to pay back my loans in 6 months so I shouldn’t empty out my savings account to care for the dog.

I’m really torn about what to do. I can’t stop crying when I think about it. I know the reasonable thing to do would be to return the dog since I was under the impression he was healthy and wouldn’t cost too much. But I have really enjoyed spending the last 2.5 weeks with my dog and he’s the sweetest thing. What should I do?
Yes I should have researched how much heartworm treatment cost, but I could only put the dog on hold for 24 hrs, my family was visiting in town, and I had to get supplies and clean house to make it ready for the dog. I AM WILLING TO PAY for the heartworm treatment, but can’t pay for the surgery too.

He has shown NO symptoms for the ingested object aside from being underweight with a low appetite, which he already had when I got him. It has not created a blockage, he poops 3 times a day. It’s unlikely that he ate it at my house since he hasn’t been left alone.

I have pet insurance just for situations like this one. BUT it doesn’t cover this because it happened during the policy waiting period.
Turns out he didn’t swallow anything. Additional x rays show that he has a BB embedded in his skin and the object near his stomach is a pellet from a gun. Somebody shot him twice.

Get back to the rescue and see what they say and see if they can help with this.

You shouldn’t be getting a dog and within a couple of weeks spending that sort of money.

Rescues usually have their veterinary treatment at a lower cost and the least they should do is put it through their books. This should of all been done when you took the dog on.

Do go back to them.

Advice needed regarding a labrador that keeps being sick?

I have a yellow labrador she is 1 1/2 years old. I got her when she was a small puppy. I rescued her from appauling conditions where she was not even fed dog food she was fed cat food. Every since I have had her she has had problems with vomiting, She will be ok for a week or so then she will have a bout of vomiting which lasts any thing from a couple of day to up to 1 1/2 weeks. She has vomiting episodes every month, some times 2 or 3 times a month. I have taken her back and forth to the vets every time and they don’t know what is causing it some times they say she has a infection and give her antibiotics other times they just give her special food to eat for a few weeks. which stops it for a while but the vomiting comes back again. I have taken her to several vets to get a second opinion but despite doing many tests none of the vets I have taken her to can tell me why she keeps vomiting. With the vets advice we have tried many different dog foods to see if it is the food that is making her sick, but it seems to happen which ever food we give her. Is This normal are some dogs just prone to vomiting, does any one else have a dog that is like this and has episodes of vomiting. She is having another episode of vomiting at the moment and has been vomiting during the night. I am going to take her to vets in a couple of hours when they open. what can I do. I feel so sad for her and just want a happy health dog. I would do any thing to stop this vomiting. Any advice would be much appreciated

thanks in advance
she hasn’t been weight for a little while but As far as im aware she isn’t over weight , she does not look over weight and isn’t fat. Last time we took her to the vets the vet did coment that her front looked strange shape and rather big but he did not think it was fat or that she was over weight. The vet said he would investigate and look in to it at a later date but that she was too young at the time. He did not seem to think it was any thing serious though.
I also forgot to mention that I know most labradors are known to love there food and eat and eat. But my labrador is completly the oposite. She isn’t the opposite she does not eat that much and isn’t that interested in food. She does eat but not much.
I don’y give her any chocolate as I know that is very bad for dogs. I don’t really give her many treats either. I give her dental sticks and perhaps 1 or 2 treat sticks a week thats all but half the time she won’t eat them any way.

Wow. I commend you for trying to find her expert help.

Could be so many things and i know you said you tried different foods, but on a hunch and given her young age (which is why i don’t think of things like cancer) i keep coming back to something like irritable bowel syndrome, or something that is regularly building up in her and causing a reaction.

Have you tried the process of elimination with foods? On a hunch, i would personally try the following:

2 weeks on gluten/grain free diet

How can I tell if my dog is sick or injured?

I came home from work today and my dog is usually jumping all over me, but today she slowly came up to me, sat down and whined. I was immediately concerned and thought she might just have to go to the bathroom, so I ran to the door to grab her leash. She took a few steps towards me and then lied down on her stomach, when again normally she would be overly excited.
I carried her down the stairs and out the front door and as soon as I put her down on the grass, it was as though nothing was the matter! She peed and poo’d normally and was even pulling on the leash in excitement to smell things. I took her back inside and tried lifting both her hind legs and feeling her stomach, nothing seems out of the usual.
This morning I also noticed when I fed her that she was a bit hesitant to eat her food, but when I fed her again after I took her out she was back to her usual self and scarfed down the bowl.
I have been watching her closely ever since and she seems to be hesitant about moving her back legs. Could this possibly be a stomach problem, or a hip problem?
She is an 8 year old mini American Eskimo. You might think that’s pretty old, but most Eskies live until they’re 15, so she’s actually doing great. She hasn’t had a health problem in over a year, except for a small bout of vomiting that was solved by a food change.
As you know vets are extremely expensive and I’m by no means a wealthy individual, so I thought since she seems to be 95% good I’d ask you guys before seeking professional advice. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
** Forgot to mention that she is spayed, so it can’t be Pyometra. Thanks for the advice anyways! That’s one thing I can cross off the list I guess…

Could heath problems be a reason for his bad attitude? Need serious advice?

My dogs behavior is getting worse and worse, despite all the training efforts we have put in on him. Infact he is now being nasty to our other dog and bullying her.

He has been in and out of the doggy hospital his whole life (2 years). We his owners are physically drained, mentally drained, and financially drained from his vet expenses.

He has been sick since he was a puppy. It seems once we get one condition under control he develops another.

Our dog to us it typically friendly, kind, loving, affectionate a really good dog inside these 4 walls. But get him out of these four walls and he acts terrible. And he used to love people but now he isn’t friendly toward people he doesn’t know.

It could be because his whole life he has been sick, and at the hospital and home resting and we get him out when we can but socialization hasn’t been a big thing we’ve been able to do due to the fact he is always sick.

What do you think:

Also here is a current list of his health problems:

Health issues: (Some of these are conditions and some of these are things that are being looked into further)

Allergies (currently being treated for)

Breathing problems (may be related to something more)

Gastrointestinal Issues (Including Pancreatitis, where he did vomit blood several times, currently being managed and watched closely)

Severe anxiety issues (currently being treated for)

Extremely rapid heartrate

Tires easily, too easily

always panting and short of breath

Can’t keep weight on. (Constant battle)

(He has been through so much tested and pretty much lived the first two years of his life in and out of the doggy hospital, its sad really)

He has some other mild conditions that are managable but those are his big issues.

Is this going to be the reality for the rest of his life? And what can we do to fix his behavior?

How do we know if this behavior is caused by pain and discomfort or something else? Thanks
ADD: with the new baby coming we are a little fearful of his bad days and ofcourse the finances are always on our mind.
He still has a lot of fight in him. I’ll know when he is done. (I have had to put down pets before, they let you know when they are done)
add: When we first got him we were a month away from getting married, just out of school, and we had a nice savings. (all that money went to him, now there is a lot of stress on us) I know that sounds selfish but its hard not to be sometimes. I mean we are trying to provide a good future for our child but we don’t know how that is going to happen if we keep having this vet bills pile up

Maybe we are thinking selfishly but we do love him and want to care for him at the same time
ADD: He is a 2 year old poodle. he still has more good days than bad and loves life. He isn’t ready to leave this earth yet.

I told him we would fight as long as he is willing

I told him we would fight as long as he is willing
ADD: I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we weren’t able to socialize him when he was younger and I don’t know how to go about it now at this age with this behavior. Now that most of his issues appear to be under control (according to the vet, though he feels they are all interealted, we just have to keep looking for the cause)

Bauser answers:

You don’t say what breed, but I would be concerned for this dog. I doubt he will have any quality of life in the future and would be best in a home with adults only and probably no other pets. If that can’t be arranged, you should consider euthanization.

OK back to subject! I think it’s a shame to even have a dog that can’t chew on food on its own, i think its cruel to not feed a dog for weeks or even months just to win a medal or trophy.
How does a human body feels like when we don’t eat right we feel weak and empty, they need to put their feet on the dogs shoes and maybe after they feel how it feels to be the worlds ugliest thing they feel some kind of compassion and take the dogs to a local dog clinic and just get rid of them.

Dreamed about strong waves with an old bridge and building, a sick pet with my 2 brothers, his daughter n mom.?

Ok i had this dream.

My mom, my eldest brother, the brother i followed (in terms of birth) with his daughter and me went to a beach.

Now the moment we got there, i saw this very strong current. Then next thing i saw was my brother (i followed in terms of birth was on that water with a strong current swimming).

After that, i saw her daughter excitedly joined him. But she almost go drowned because of the strong current. Her dad save her, and from the shore i reached for her.

Then we all went for our cottage.

From here i saw the big picture of the place. From were i sit i see this wall like windows with broken glasses, blocking some of the strong waves coming from the other side. [ side 1 (wall like windows) side 2 (where we seated)].

Then from the distance i could see lots of people enjoying the strong waves (on the other side of the wall like windows coz it stretch from the farthest right to the left). Then from that moment, started seeing a car falling from a particular part of the ocean floor eaten by the strong current.

Then i realize the ocean floor i am seeing is a bridge. It closes when there’s a pretty strong current for a min then re open when its ok to cross.

After seeing that, we found our self inside a car, ready to cross that very old mechanical bridge. As soon as it gives the signal, and theres no more strong current, we drove really fast to cross on the other side.

Then from there, we went to this very old building, particularly in a room, where there is a sick dog and a healthy one. Funny because i knew from the dream that this is the puppy our dog had, and its there because we give it to someone. (And we seems to know the place, and that someone we know is staying there but i didn’t saw it)

That ends my dream.

Bauser answers:

I think you have very strong feelings that get the best of you sometimes and you deal with them by crossing the bridge which appears old but was sufficient to ferry you and your family. Your family represents different parts of your personality and you dream of the family because you are a loyal person (Dog) A sick puppy would represent hurt feelings. The water you can do when you have all aspects of your personality working. (your family is able to surf the current) But you still have to learn how to deal with your feelings when it comes to loyalty. Are you being loyal to something now that is disloyal to you in your conscious Life?

How do dogs sense emotions?

Hey there.

So I was wondering a couple things about dogs…mainly how they are so sensitive when it comes to feelings? My sister had leukemia as a child, and we had a big rottweiler named Jake and when she was able to be out of the hospital and live at home for a bit, Jake would lay down next to her bed and wouldn’t budge unless he was told to. If she woke up and needed help, he would run to find my mom or dad and bring them in. When I was little too, three and four years old, he would let me lay my head on him and sleep, and no matter what was going on he made sure that I was doing fine and he didn’t move until I got up and walked away, or my parents came and took me. I am just wondering where that comes from? How did he know my sister was so sick without actually being told?

Then also, I saw a picture online of a soldier who was killed in action unfortunately and there is a picture of his dog laying down next the casket that he is in, and according to the family, the dog is very sad and seems depressed. How does the dog even know that he had died?

These might sound like very basic questions, but I am a logical thinker, and I don’t understand how dogs can know all this stuff without actually being told anything, or being able to understand our language.

Bauser answers:

Dogs are incredibly keen observers of human behavior, so what people tend to think of as a dog “sensing” our emotions is actually the dog learning that even tiny changes in our facial expressions, tone of voice or movements are associated with certain behaviors from us. I know that takes a lot of the romance out of it, but it doesn’t make it any less comforting when a dog lays with you when you’re feeling down. Since dogs are bred to work with humans, it benefits us and the dogs to selectively breed for dogs who read us very well.

Dogs can tell that we’re ill sometimes, probably due both to slight changes in how we smell (some dogs are even trained for this) and in how we’re behaving. In your sister’s case, it also probably had something to do with the concern your parents were showing as well. And they do often know from the change in smell that we have died.

Some dogs, like your Jake, do seem to instinctively understand that children are more fragile than adults and must be treated far more gently, but this is not a universal trait. We’ve had several dogs of this sort, and not only were they more gentle with kids, they put up with a great deal more misbehavior from kids as well.

A lot of dogs will be protective of the children in the family, too.

The sort of dog who reads its humans very well also has often learned to seek them out when help is needed. Even though we get much more emotional about it when the dog comes to us to tell us one of the kids isn’t doing well than when he wants us to get a toy that rolled under the furniture, he’s doing both things because he’s learned that we can help him meet his goals. It’s still a fairly complex behavior though, and certainly one we prize in dogs.

Sounds like Jake was an exceptional dog!

Bauser answers:

That is an old wives tale. A dogs nose is much like a persons lips and they can get dried out and chapped. If they crack it can hurt very badly due to the sensativity of the area and it could get infected. You can take a basic chapstick (no minty, tingly, or flavored) and apply a small amount to the nose. The dog may lick it slightly but as long as it is plain it will not do any harm.

Some breeds, and individual dogs do have noses that change colors with the season. Its commonly called “snow nose”.

can you please read my story?

it may not be medically accurate but….

How Lola Died

My fifteenth birthday was the worst day of my life. I was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia which is a vile disease that affects the bone marrow and blood count. This is a leukemic disease that most commonly affects adults in their sixties. According to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, there are approximately 245,225 people living with leukemia in the United States and I was one of them. My name is Lola, I am fifteen years old and this is my story.
My mom had thrown me the biggest party. There was cake, a DJ, you name it, and it was there. I couldn’t ask for anything more. When everyone had come it was time to cut the cake. My chest was feeling kind of tight, like something was pressing against it almost as if I was wearing a very tight shirt. It was hurting but I didn’t say anything to my mom because I thought the pain would subside later. It didn’t, if anything, it got worse and it the pain kept getting worse until I couldn’t take any more. I didn’t want to worry anyone so I slipped out of the house when no one was looking thinking I just needed some fresh air. The next thing I knew I was in cold sweats, laying on the floor.
It felt like everything was spinning in circles. I was seeing doubles, triples, and quadruples. I couldn’t focus. It felt like being on a ship swaying uncontrollably back and forth, side to side. I couldn’t scream or call for help. I stayed on the ground hoping for someone to pass by but no one did. It felt like twenty minutes had passed. I felt better enough so I slowly got up. The world was still spinning but I was scared and I needed to find my parents. I couldn’t walk very much at all. It was like I was a little kid trapped in a hundred year old body. It hurt to move. It hurt to breathe and I couldn’t do anything. I had reached the doorway and when I was trying to open the door, my hands just couldn’t get a hold of the knob. I felt a push behind the door and I couldn’t move fast enough to get out of the way.
Before I knew it I was on the floor….again. My mother’s face red with laughter drained all of its color as soon as she saw me. I must have looked sick as a dog because she let out a terrified gasp and dropped to her knees moving my hair out of my face to see what happened. I couldn’t tell her. I couldn’t see her no matter how close she got. Pandemonium broke out as my mom started screaming out for my dad, telling me it was going to be ok. My dad came out from the house and saw me and my mother. He lifted me in his arms and me out in the car.
My mom sat in the back of the car with me as my dad sped to the hospital. She held my hand but her gesture was futile in contrast to all the excruciatingly profound pain. She told me to keep breathing but breathing would only instigate more pain.
Everything about the hospital was placid. The walls were an explicit shade of blueish-green. My dad took me out of the car and ran to the doors of the hospital with me in his arms. Everyone stare at me like a ravenous snake looking at its prey. I realized that I hadn’t started crying until then. A nurse rolled out a bed and almost immediately I lost consciousness.
I dreamed of beautiful waters cascading down mountains forming a pond at the end. Everyone I loved was there: my mom, dad aunts and uncles, my friends and my brothers and sisters. It was then that I realized that I could die and never wake up from this dream. There was so much I still had to do. There was so much I had to live for. I wanted a family, my own kids. I wanted to tell my parents how much I love them. I couldn’t just die. If I woke up from this sweet trance it is imperative that I tell everyone I love how I feel about them.
As I was waking up I heard someone sobbing. I let out a moan and my mom jumped out of her seat. Her eyes were red and puffy and her face was stricken with tears. It hurt to see her like that. My mom never cried in front of anyone, not once. The only time I saw her cry was when grandma passed away.
She told me I was asleep for five hours. The doctors said that I had a blood clot in my chest and that they took it out. Finally she told me something I was unprepared to hear. I had cancer. No one else was in the room with her when she told me. The doctors precluded more than one person being in the room.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I spent the night staring at the wall. I felt numb to everything. I just wanted it to end. I wished that this was all just a terrible nightmare but I knew this was all real and I had to be strong.
The next morning my mom left for work right from the hospital. When my dad came he looked afflicted. His face was sullen even though there was nothing to be angry about. He sat down on the chair beside my bed an looked at me fighting back tears. I looked into his eyes and wept. He told me not to fret. Despite my dad being sad, his calmness was palpable. I also tried to remain calm and above all, optimistic just like him
I spent the next few days in the hospital. i didn’t have enough strength in me to move or do anything I wanted. If I wanted to hold a glass I couldn’t or else I would drop it and it would break into shards. All I could do was watch local television channels on a tiny screen in my room. Whenever my pain became unbearable I would ask
and it would almost immediately terminate the pain. Often when I was bored I would reverie about being out of the hospital and hanging out with my friends singing out in garish voices and not caring who looked at us.
Whenever someone came to see me they looked disheveled. There was just something about them, or it could have even been me. My younger sister only came to see me once. She was so chaste, so demure, so innocent. She didn’t know anything about the world and its horrors. She should have never seen me like that because I scarred her for life. She looked up to me and she saw mw so weak, so defenseless. But that didn’t seem to bother her because she plopped down into the chair indolently and started to talk to me like nothing was wrong. That was the last time I ever saw her or anyone else for the matter because that was the day I died.
During my stay at the hospital I leaned to never depreciate what you have. Always be grateful for your life because you can lose it all in the blink of an eye.
THIS IS A STORY! I it has nothing to do with me……..lol
do you guys like it? if not why? if yes why?

Need advice (I’m 13) PLEASE HELP!!?

Ok me and my cousin decided to got drunk a while ago… like a 3 weeks. I smoked 2 ciggarettes and was talking with my cousin’s super-hot 15 year old freind on the phone. He was drunk at the time- (We got drunk off of Jaggetmier, captain morgan, and 2 cans of beer) He over-did it after I told him he had enough, and he was asking me to poor the shots. He tried doing it, and he told me he was seeing double. so, whenever he poured a shot I drank it for him, cuz I didn’t want him to die. After that, I remember me talking about driving a car down to the gas station and trying to buy some alcohol. then I remember saying I wished the drinking age was 13 and he was like “then I’d get wasted every night!” and we were laughing so hard. Then, I blacked out and remember seeing my cousin throwing up. I tryed waking him up, but he bit me in my upper-right thigh. then I remember stumbling around and hit a parked car. Then I went to sleep on the bed. In the morning, my cousin was wasted and everyone knew about it. He was as sick as a dog too. I was sober, but still a little dizzy and had alcohol on my breath. My parents caught me and were cool about it. But, my cousin was beaten.

I keep on craving ciggerettes now… and I want it to stop. I know it was stupid, yes, but how can it stop? Does the craving go away or what? I don’t want to end up spending all my money on ciggerettes, and please I’m serious. I don’t want to see a doctor… just I need some advice.

You’re on time. Don’t smoke anymore, it will be hard the first three weeks but then you will adapt and won’t need the cigarettes anymore.

Also be careful and don’t drink too much in parties, nowadays you also have to pay attention and always stay close to your drink to avoid someone putting drugs into it when you’re not watching. Always remain conscious, in that way you will avoid embarrassing experiences or in the worst of cases an unexpected pregnancy. Also don’t be inside a car if someone drunk is driving it, imagine if your parents loose you because of it.

today was such a bad day, i want to die……………………………………………………………..?

i haven’t been this depressed in so long. because last year i joined a sport outside of school and it made me so happy. then i decided i want to quit and join cross country for my school because i thought i would be better at it and it would take up less time, and i’m starting to regret it.

- i skipped cross country practice friday. i didn’t run on the off days: saturday, sunday, and monday because i was so tired. then today we had a race and i did EXTREMELY bad. totally my fault and i regret not running.

- last night my friend texted me about some random school thing. (she’s also on the xc team) and then i asked her about the cross country uniform TWICE, and she never replied. then today i found out that i had to leave school early and that i had to get my uniform that day. so then at lunch that same friend was with her friends and i went over and the coach walked by, and then all went WTF why didn’t you ask her about the uniform. and then they made a huge deal about it. and one girl i hate goes “you’re so socially awkward. you just freeze up” (she is a psycho bitch) and then the friend i texted agreed and was telling me i should have asked her. IF SHE CARES SO MUCH THEN SHE SHOULD HAVE REPLIED TO MY TEXTS.

- then i left school early for the cross country race. when i met everyone, the coach goes “where were you friday practice?” and i just went uh…and turned red.

- that friend that i texted never talks to me during practice! she talks to everyone but me. i always have to talk to her first. i was sick of it so i just didn’t talk to her. and then on the car ride to the race i didn’t talk AT ALL and it was awkward because i have no good friends on the xc team.

- then i did horribly at the race and started crying a little right after i finished but i controlled it and i don’t think anyone noticed.

- then i had to walk home because my mom didn’t pick up the phone. her phone is off for some reason and her car is here. i wanted to go to the gym with her so i could run more.

- i took off all my makeup and i look pale and i went to the garage with my dog to check if my moms car was there and then i saw my older friend and her parents. and her mom is a huge bitch and she was like oh you quit rowing? (the sport i did before) and it was just awkward because i was in such a bad mood and i looked horrible and they were the last people i wanted to see. and i think she got kinda mad because i didn’t have my dog on a leash. then i went home and started crying.

the big thing here is that i don’t know if i made the right decision to quit rowing. like there are no people i talk to or get along with on my cross country team, and i was expecting to be good, but i’m not that great. i made varsity but i should be better. part of me thinks that i should just stick it out and join rowing in the spring.

i’m just sooooooo depressed for some reason. help. part of me thinks i will be happy if i run on my own and get better at cross country. but i’m getting depressed because the rowing season already started and i used to love it

Just think…
Does any of this really matter? If your day today was amazing or horrible it’s barely even effecting tomorrow

Just take a breather and go back into rowing!

What happened to me today is that my shoes that I normally wear STUNK cuz they were left in a bag after being in a lake so I couldn’t wear them to school… I had to wear my dad’s shoes and they cut into the back of my foot so bad my feet were both bleeding by the time I got to school. Without realizing this I took off my shoes with my socks covered in blood and the girl behind me hits her foot with mine by accident – then she sees the blood and gets all freaked out …. And then I notice it and its like UGHHH
And now everyones talking about my bleeding feet and her touching them

Accredited breeder / terrible conditions ( HELP )?

Please can anyone steer me in the right direction , I will be speaking with the USDA on Monday but what else shall I do about the following situation! This afternoon we I went with my Mom to meet a breeder , who was recommended by the AKC parent club in Somerset, PA. Now we didn’t expect to see puppies yet as it is far too early ( I breed myself very occassionaly when I want a pup but totally differnt breeds and I don’t let anyone in my home until pups are over 4 weeks ) but we thought we’d see mom and dad. My mom is wanting a Chihuahua to show so was interested in seeing the sire and dam before deciding to look further afield at other breeders. However when we got to the house it was empty , we looked through the windows and the floor was half dug up / nothing else inside at all. We went to get back in the car and a blue transit van pulled up , the woman got out and said they were having work done in the house so they had just drove up from their caravan where they’d been living. But don’t worry we have the dogs and pups in the back of the van , she said we were lucky to catch them as they were just passing and were now on their way and if we wanted to reserve a pup we better hand over $200 now. The man then leant over the back and grabbed the mother out by the scruff of her neck ( poor little girl ) and took her away. The lady grabbed the pups ( 8 days old ) and was going to pass them outside to us in the very high winds and drizzling rain! I immediately said no they need to be kept warm can you please put them back. She was trying to sell during this time and I was saying we were only wanting to see what the lines were like as my mom isn’t in any hurry as she wants a good dog for showing ! She then said ” well these pups will show , even though they don’t have papers !” I said ” They must have papers , you are an AKC accredited breeder !” she said ” you don’t need to register a litter to be an accredited breeder , and you CAN show dogs without papers !” I said look ” I know what I’m talking about , I am a breeder myself , and there are rules you must follow! come on Mom no way are you having anything to do with these! We got back in the car and left very quickly , my Mom feeling really sick and myself feeling really angry! We have talked all night about it , and they seem to be living and selling puppies from the back of a van .I am going to speak with the USDA people on Monday , I have scoured the internet for information on these people and found they are members of the Chihuahua Club of America (How do I go about reporting them to the Chihuahua Club of America?) I have also found adverts on a few dodgy puppy advertising sites with 3 different address’ for them , one in TN, one in NY and another in PA where they are registered with the Chihuahua Club of America I have reported the adverts to all of the sites. I then rang the breed club and spoke to a lovely lady who confirmed they were accredited breeders , and said to ring the AKC and ASPCA. Do you think the ASPCA can do anything? They have never been interested in anything I’ve reported in the past ! Any advice on what I should do , to try and stop these vile excuses for human beings will be appreciated.
Sorry the post is soo long , I could go on even more .

Good dog insurance brands?

I love my dog very much, and I want the best for her. Recently my dog has had a bout of ear infections, and my mother isn’t very happy about the high costs for the vet visit and the high costs for the medications. We were reading in Dog Fancy about the benefits of pet insurance for unexpected and expected health bills for my dog.

From experience, are there any particularly excellent examples of dog insurance out there?
I do live in the USA. I wonder if the Kennel Club will cover me? Have to look into it.

We were on the kennel club insurance. It got too much to pay, so we rang them and they put us on a cheaper policy of theirs. I believe it is the CRUFTS one.

My Pug had stenotic Nares surgery, X-rays, ECG, Blood tests etc and overall it costed us £490 in vet bills. We got a claim form and in a few weeks we recieved a cheque for £390 so overall its a pretty good Insurance to go for.

okay well the question explains most of it. I’m currently doing some research on what company has the most afforable coverage for my dog. But there is so many to chose from: medical insurance, health insurance and vetinary insurance. What would you recommend for coverage and with what company at an afforable cost?

Best insurance for long distance u-haul move?

I am driving a 26′ truck from San Antonio TX to Vancouver, Canada. It’s about 3000 miles. It will be me, (50 yr. old lady) and my two dogs. What is the best insurance carrier? Yes, I was going to call homeowners’ (USAA) insurance tommorrow. Hopefully they can handle the U-haul part. I guess then, I should call Blue Cross for the other…? I don’t have health insurance.

how can i get legal advice regarding a pet health insurance company who denied a claim. I appealed to the co.?

i have had the same pet insurance for 8 years. ln feb 2004 my lab had a smal nosebleed. took him to the vet and was told dogs can get nosebleeds and appeared healthy. Had a couple of episodes of reverse sneezing. called the vet and was told most likely allergies. his insurance policy is from july to july. In september he had a large nosebleed and after many tests was diagnosed with nasal cancer. the insurance company refused to pay stating his iinitial symptoms began in the previous policy period and therefore not covered. No where in his medical record does it state he had cancer. I feel as if I’ve always done the best for my lab, securing lhealth insurance and taking him to the vet for any unusual symptoms and I feel i’ve been let down by both.
Could the vet have diagnosed him earlier or should the pet health insurance co take responsibilty and pay the medical cost i have incurred for his treatment. Who can i go to for advice. Is there time limitation in persuing action. thanks

Bauser answers:

Talk to your vet. He should write a letter to the insurance company and give them a time-line for the cancer diganosis. You should also have the records of your dogs vet exams. You can make copies and send them to the insurance co., highlighting the dates of exams. Have the vet office make you a copy. If they refuse call the Veterinary Medical Board in your state. By law they are required to make you a copy or a written summary of the records. The only other thing is go to an attorney….but that will probably cost you more that the vet bill. Good Luck and God Bless

When you are rescuing a dog, the price does not matter. I will rescue a dog and spend 1,000 dollars on it rather than spending 1,000 dollars on a purebred puppy. This is because i know this money then goes to save more dogs and helps with the vet bills to keep those rescued dogs alive.
I understand $350 may seem like alot for a rescue dog, but they have to add up the age and price to keep the dog in the rescue, to determine the adoption fee. Due to the fact that the dog is still a puppy, that makes the price higher. Also, it needed previous vaccination and then the always needed food. These factors are added together. It balances out the vaccinations and the money due to the fact that the dog it a puppy, is put into an account to dave more dog. This is mostly a right price for this dog. And remmeber, this money does not go into someone else’s pocket to spend on themselves, it goes to the dogs!

Bauser answers:

You are not mentally sick
this is more common then you think
first off you need to start thinking better of yourself
and do not use the fact of abuse as something you think that has made you this way
be honest with yourself
and look at the good and look at what kind of person you are
and understand that you are nice and always do the best you can do
and be a good person
if you need to chat you can email me

Bauser answers:

Because the US electorate are happy with that.

First of all, Obama wants to make insurance more available to all. And change the system so that it is cheaper, and also so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Holland and Switzerland where private companies are involved in providing insurance.

Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well.

FACT – the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.

FACT – the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage.

That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

Things are going to change as Obama was voted in to change things. But as for why they are the way things are now? Well that is the fault of the US voters. If they wanted a different system, they could have voted for people who would bring in a different system, like they have now with Obama.

My dog needs to visit the vet… Need vet/vet tech advice. And holistic or conventional?

First of all, I’m poor. I’ve got a part-time job and am in grad school.

I’m a big fan of holistic medicine and have often given my dog (and myself) herbs and homeopathy and things that have made a big difference in his health.

He’s 13 years old and recently he’s developed some bladder problems. Yesterday he actually started peeing in the house, which is really unusual for him. He gets a number of kidney supporting herbs/supplements (such as cranberry). When I started giving this to him, it seemed to improve a lot, but now it’s gotten bad again.

So my dilemma: I’d really like to take him to a holistic vet. From my preliminary research, the holistic vets in the area are expensive and don’t have immediate openings… One I found that sounded good I’d need to wait about 2 weeks for an appointment.

1. Do you think that, given the symptoms I described, it would be OK to wait a couple weeks to have him seen by a vet?

2. Do you think that a holistic vet would be a good match for his symptoms?

3. Do you think that I should get blood work, urine tests or whatever other tests needs to be done at our regular vet (immediately) and then go to the holistic vet when they have an opening? I really don’t want to do this because that would mean two office visits to two vets and just stepping into a vet’s office is expensive.
But holistic vets can check for all of the things (kidney stones, diabetes, etc.) that conventional vets can, right?

And the vet I’m looking at also uses conventional medicine. It just seems to me like I’ve got more options with a holistic vet.
It isn’t the problem of money that makes me wait 2 weeks. It’s the problem that the earliest appointment I can get with a holistic vet is in 2 weeks.
Majestikmoose: I don’t know where you live, but where I live there seems to be far more people wanting holistic care than doctors to provide it (even though there are a dozen doctors in my area).

So, as much as I don’t like it, the law of supply and demand says that they should be more expensive than a regular vet.

One place that I called that had both holistic and conventional vets charged about twice as much for an office visit wtih the holistic vet.

Bauser answers:

He needs blood work, urinalysis, possible X-Rays(stone), possible tumor, kidney, liver, diabetes or etc. Or hopefully could just be a bladder infection. What was working for him, isn’t any longer. I wouldn’t wait 2 Weeks, no way. He should be seen ASAP. You may want to check with the vet some will hold a check for a week or two? What’s best for him? Is he in pain (don’t know, he can’t talk) for his sake take him in. Best of Luck and hope he’s okay.

i adopted an english bulldog a week ago. when i went to look at her i asked the owners if she was healthy and i explained to them that if she had any health problems i could not take her because i cant afford any vet bills. i am a single mother of two. they assured me that she is in perfect health and i took her home.
after a week her symptoms only got worse. and now she is throwing up everytime she trys to eat or drink. so i took her to the vet. turns out she has severe ear infections, eye infections, hip dispashia and advanced Pnemonia. now she is at the vet for at least a week with an iv. she is on multiple meds and is getting a series of injections daily.
the vet gave me an estamate of $800 for the final bill. the previous owner refuse to help me with the bill. they said “its not like you bought a car with a waranty”

Does a lack of interest by male dogs indicate a problem with my female dog?

Before anybody chastises me for not spaying my dog, let me just say that this dog was dumped on us and we couldn’t afford to get her spayed for a while – although it is now in our budget for right after she is out of this heat.

That said, I think my dog is about 7 years old. She has been in heat before and whenever she starts bleeding, there are dogs coming out of the woodwork to visit our yard. But this time, we have had no visitors even though she has been discharging for a couple weeks now.

We spent the weekend visiting family, and I thought we were going to have an issue with a family member’s dog, but he showed absolutely no interest in her. He is not neutered yet (he’s pretty young) but I know from past experience that he knows what to do already. This caused me to become concerned.

What might this mean? Like I said, I am taking her to get spayed as soon as this cycle is done, but I am asking for any input from knowledgeable dog breeders so I can be prepared to ask the right questions at the vet’s office.

Are there any health issues that this might be a symptom of? Maybe is it just her age?
Jessie – That does not answer my question. In case you didn’t read the whole thing, I am taking her to the vet when she is out of heat.

I don’t know what your circumstances are, but to most 17 year olds, $200+ might be a pretty penny. I know a lot of adults who don’t have that much extra in their bank account, and would have to scrimp for a while to come up with that.

I am not going to take her to some discount sterilization clinic. I care about who cuts her open.

I still would appreciate some input from anybody who has experienced this before. I cannot find any mention of this type of thing through Google. Everything says she should be attracting males like crazy.

At what age do dogs tend to become infertile?

I brought over a 15 month old small Tibetan Terrier I was house sitting to my home for a few minutes and all he did was growl and bark at her through the glass door. Surprised me I thought his reaction would be different. So I also have the same questions as you on why there was a lack of interest. I am sure there is nothing wrong with my puppy, I think maybe males are only attracted at certain points of the heat cycle.

How much is a heartworm test? If positive, how much are we looking to spend on treatment?

I don’t want to sound terrible. I want to do everything we can do help our dog. But we have already shelled out thousands on his health problems and he is only 2 years old.

We’ve hit hard times and we are so scared we aren’t going to be able to treat him. If we have to we will take out a loan. I’m not working due to the pregnancy and my husband was laid off about 3 weeks ago. Hopefully he will have a new job soon.

My dog is sick and I suspect heartworms. He has been on preventative his whole life, but never tested (I’m looking at his records now) The old vet didn’t test unless the dog missed a dose or something. New vet tests yearly and he is due for a test in January but his symptoms scream heartworms so I am going to take him this week.

My husband would like to know how much a heartworm test is?

And I want to be prepared if it comes back positive for heartworms how much we are looking at spending for treatment. So i can get things organized.

Also what are the chances for recovery? Can it be cured?

He has always been sick with something or other. He suffered with gastrointestinal problems that almost took him from us twice. He does have a compromised immune system. We are scared.

Thanks

Again I don’t want to sound horrible, but I have to find away to take care of him and I have to think about the money too. I may have to borry from my parents for treatment or something.
ADD: Rehoming him is not an option, I don’t care that times are hard we will find a way to care for him. We may be in debt over him but we love him
bonnie, he didn’t come from a breeder. Well not a real one atleast
I will have had him for 2 years this halloween and i wouldn’t trade him for the world
Also even though he was on preventative he was exposed to 3 dogs that had heartworms. Is it possible with his compromised immune system that he could have caught it from them.

He is going to the doc tomorrow

Bauser answers:

The test is about $25, at a vet that is not screwing people. Make sure they aren’t doing a full blood test, a heart worm test takes like 5 drops of blood. If you see them filling up red or purple topped vials then they are planning on doing a CBC which is unnecessary and can be upwards of $200.

Make sure you ask what they are doing every step of the way and how much it costs.

There is a treatment…but it’s kind of expensive and dangerous. Though it’s like over 90% effective.

The treatment is a series of arsenic injections and then a heavy dose of heart worm medication. This is also not an outpatient procedure. The vet will usually keep them at the clinic to watch them since it is so dangerous.

They will also be very sluggish and sore (the injections go in the hips) and may not be able to walk very well.

If you are willing to go through the treatment ask your vet about a payment plan. As long as you’ve paid your bill’s in full and on time before they should work with you. They know that it’s better to treat quickly to avoid later problems.

If your vet won’t do a payment plan, call around. The vets that are most likely to do payment plans are doctors who own their own clinic and not commercial places like the clinics in Petsmart.

I don’t remember how much we used to charge for the treatment, I’m sorry, but I do wish you luck.

Bauser answers:

You can still give your parakeet seeds, just make sure it’s eating fruits and vegetables, too. Most budgies like pears, apples, berries, cantaloupe (high in vitamin A), bananas, peaches. They like corn, carrots, broccoli (good source of calcium), spinach, zucchini, squash, sweet potatoes. They also like cuttlebone, mineral block, hard boiled eggs, cooked rice, and cooked pasta. They love millet, but don’t offer them too much of it because it is fatty.

Budgies will do some exercising in their cages, hopping from their perches. They can also exercise if you get them a play gym. They love too swing, climb ladders, and have fun.

Give them lots of love and attention, and they should thrive.

Also, make sure to take them for yearly vet exams so they remain healthy and happy.

Dogs and Fleas? Help please!?

Can fleas make a dog sick? What can I put on him to keep the fleas away? He was a stray that my dad brought home over 9 years ago. I am not sure how old he is since he was a stray. He has not ate anything in about 3 days, he has dropped a lot of weight, and he has this nasty stuff coming out of his eyes (yellowish-greenish color). He is also breathing sort-of heavy. He is up and walking around. I bathed him today and he was covered in fleas. Can the fleas cause a dog to get sick? He is an “outside dog”. He is dearly loved and I contacted the vet, I would have to use the emergency vet, which is pretty far away from my home. Please help me…what should I do until Monday when I can bring him to the local vet?
I just gave him some left over people food and his normal food, he is picking at both of them now. He would not eat anything until I bathed him. He seems to like the people food. Guess he thinks it is a treat.
Thanks to everyone who has answered with concern. I have talked to another vet (a local one) and I will be bring him to that vet tomorrow morning. I will have to pay a little extra since I will be using the “emergency” services since they are not open on Sunday. But, it will be worth it. Although everyone has offered great advice on Yahoo! Answers, they can’t save my dog, that is up to the vet to try. He has been with me for over 9 years and never given me a problem. He is breathing a little better, and seems to be glad to have got a bath. Thank you. Advice appreciated.
Also, I checked his gums and his top gums do have more of a white color.

Bauser answers:

Your dog’s condition doesn’t sound good at all. When a dog stops eating, it’s a major concern. You can try to entice your dog to eat, that might help. Try foods he can’t resist that he normally doesn’t get. But if he hasn’t eaten in 3 days, he’s probably feeling to ill to eat. And yes, flea infestations can cause sickness. Although it sounds like it is something more severe than fleas, which do not make a dog have labored breathing. I really think you should go to the Emergency clinic, your dog has given you nine years of loyalty, make it up to him before it’s too late. I wish you and the dog the best.

what do you think of these situations- dog neglect or good enough?

these are hypothetical situations. i’m just curious how you would label them, as neglect
or at least the dogs aren’t in a pound:

1. inside dogs that are home alone for 9-10+ hours a day, and yelled at if they have any potty accidents

2. dogs that are outside alone all day long, not walked, but fed and visited by the family

3. dogs that are never walked ever, but let out in a small backyard to do their business. they often chew up the house and get yelled at.

4. a sick dog (say nothing the dog can immediately die from like bleeding, but say diabetes, cancer or something else chronic that causes pain) who’s owner tries remedies he or she reads over the computer. none of the remedies helped but still doesn’t go to the vet. the owner loves the dog though and is good to the dog.

5. an acutely sick dog (say internal bleeding) whos owner doesn’t take to the vet, but the dog by pure luck recovers on its own. the owner loves the dog.

what do you think? for those? do they make you shake your head, or do you say “better off than most dogs”

I get annoyed, but there are also alot worse scenerios and abuse..but what do YOU think?
thanks for your thoughts.
i asked because those are situations i’ve read on this forum being asked. they’ll say “my puppy is having accidents all over, how do you stop this because spanking and yelling No hasn’t worked, but i work 9-10 hours”
so i get mad..but try to keep it in perspective..

Bauser answers:

These are hugely grey areas and to be honest I don’t know if I could commit to it being “good enough” or “neglect.” I work at an animal shelter (we do not euthanize for any reasons other than severe, chronic health problems or severe, dangerous behavioral problems) and I see dogs literally go “kennel crazy.” They’ve been there so long I wish that a mediocre home would come along and scoop them up before we have to put them down.
Note: A dog that is kept cooped up in a kennel with limited human contact (fingers through cages down count) will eventually go “crazy” and will become very aggressive.
But all in all we take good care of the dogs. Everyone there loves them, they get treats, toys, and a warm bed, they also get walked by volunteers and we put them in large outside play areas during the day.
I personally will not adopt out to a home that will not care for the dog but in all of the above numbered situations there’s nothing “wrong” with the homes except 4 and 5. We make people sign a contract that if a dog needs medical care it will be given promptly.
This doesn’t mean that I don’t agree that it sucks.
Situation 1 is common. And in most cases is completely okay since a healthy dog of 9-10 months or older CAN hold it for 9-10 hours until they get elderly.
What these situations lack is context. Stated this way the homes really aren’t great but I know my guy’s situation is much like number 3 only they are given tons of chew toys and don’t eat my house. They get their exercise wrestling in the house with each other.
Anyway, I completely understand your frustration because I live it every day. I guess that in these cases theoretically, the homes are better than nothing…but in all reality the dogs in these homes end up right back in the shelter.

Bauser answers:

You really need to get her into the vets before Friday. She’s sick. I could be the cat food but your vet is the only one to tell you that. I would make sure she doesn’t eat any more of it and give her plent of fresh clean water to drink.
Loss of energy is a not a good thing in a little dog.
Call your vet and see if they can see her tomorrow. Bring a stool sample in with you so they can check it for worms too.
Poor little thing!
