Your Questions About Dog Health Problems Vomiting

Thomas asks…

Dog vomiting, need advice until I get him to a vet in the morning

My dog has been vomiting a white frothy foam this morning with the runs aswell and then he stopped for about 7hours, I thought that he was going to be OK being such a long time since he was sick then all of a sudden he vomited a brown fluid that smelled like dog poo twice 2 hours apart, I rang my vet but they don’t consult until the morning, he has been licking ice cubes about 1 cube every hour, is there anything else that I should be doing for him, does this sound serious? He is 10 years old and has had no major health problems until now. Yesterday he playing and was his normal self. He hasn’t had any bones lately or been outside with out me being there to let him out and back in, strictly a inside dog, he always sticks very close by to me and I’m always aware of him being there. I have no idea what has happened and I’m so scared of losing him, he is just lazing around the place and doing a lot of sleeping now. Please any one with any advice before the morning comes around would be so great!! I’m so distraught right now, he doesn’t seem to be in any pain or discomfort, just feeling very sorry for himself, if any one has had this happen to their dog please answer some questions for me.
I took your advice and took him to a 24 hour emergency vet and sadly he was put to sleep. It was the hardest thing I ever did and he was my best friend. He had no chance of survival even with surgery they gave him a 25% going through it. He never complained and was so brave to the end. They suspected he had tumors and it was terminal.
Thank you for all your advice.

Bauser answers:

If he is vomiting feces (or what smells like feces) this is an emergency. Sounds like an obstruction! This should NOT wait until the morning!!! To be entirely honest, your dog may not make it until morning!

Steven asks…

Old dog vomiting blood and has diarrhea…?

My Black Labrador is 13 years old and has no health problems except weak hips and knees (she doesn’t require pain meds yet). Recently, my parents took her to the river and on the way home they found out that she had a bad case of diarrhea. One day later she started to vomit every hour (she has maintained her appetite). We noticed just now that there are small streaks of fresh red blood in the clear mucus that she is expelling.

She’s not friendly so we would only take her to the vet if she were close to death (it sounds horrible but she is dangerous when she is around strangers).

Does anyone know if this is common for dogs who are “on their way out?” Has this happened to any of you guys?
Thanks guys! I will definitely take her tonight.

Bauser answers:

Your dog may possibly have worms. They can ‘catch’ them from going to rivers and etc. I would definitely take your dog to the vet. Don’t be worried about how ‘bad’ she is because at vet clinics they deal with this everyday. They know restraint techniques and take great safety precautions while dealing with frightened animals.

Lizzie asks…

Does my dog have anal gland problems?

For the past two days my dog has been licking her tail area literally every 30 seconds and has scooted on our living room carpet twice. She is also acting strange–very snappy and lazy. All she has done today is lay on the couch. I even had to coax her to get up and get a treat (which I NEVER have to do). Under her tail it is now very wet and I noticed a white-ish lump about the size of a dime on the right side under her tail. She has been eating, drinking, urinating, and defecating normally, although she looks like she strains a bit when she defecates.

Does this sound like her anal gland is messed up or does it sound like another problem? I have heard of being able to push on the glands and clean them out. We’re just wondering if this warrants a trip to the vet or if it is self limiting.

Other Info:
***3 (will be 4 in a couple months) year old miniature schnauzer adopted from humane society.
***Only health problem was a stomach ulcer resulting in vomiting blood sometime in 2009. It was treated and she hasn’t had any problems like that since then.

Bauser answers:

Hopefully, her anal sac just needs to be emptied, but it really sounds as though it may be infected.
I suggest getting her to a vet, as soon as you can.
This has to be very painful, and it is dangerous, too..
Infection can spread to her mouth through her licking it,

Charles asks…

How do I treat my dog for vomiting?

My dog is a seven year old Pomeranian mix that is having trouble keeping his food down. We usually give him dry food, wet food once in awhile and there hasn’t been a major change in his diet recently. We’re not sure if it just comes with old age or if he is having stomach problems because it was really sudden.

We tried giving him lighter food (soups and such) but he is still throwing those up. He’s always been small but he is losing a lot of weight because he can’t keep any food down.

He has his shot’s regularly and has never had any health problems. Help?
He is drinking water regularly and keeps it down. He is also having regular bowel movements. Taking him to the vet is not a very popular idea with my mother since she will not admit the fact that he may be sick. I would like to make him comfortable though till I bring her around.

Bauser answers:

Your dog needs to go to the vet.

But in the mean time – try with holding food for a day. Then start to feed small bland meals. Instead of 1 or 2 meals a day – feed 6 or 8 smaller meals.

Give your dog 2 parts rice to 1 part boiled, skinless chicken. Then slowly work up to feeding his regular food.

You may want to try to hand feed him. That way you can control how fast he eats. Dogs can get sick if they eat too fast.

But if the vomiting does not stop in a day or so – it’s time for a trip to the dr.

Maybe you could put it to your mom this way…..if you vomited every time you ate and were losing weight because you could not keep any food down…would your mom take you to the dr? Yes. So, if you love your dog…and your dog is your baby…why would you give him less car than you would give your human child?

David asks…

My dog’s “problem” is making my mom get rid of him?

For a while now, my dog has been waking up in the middle of the night and is getting sick all over our dining room floor. It’s not vomit, it’s diarrhea, and this morning my mom said she’s getting rid of him. Does anyone know about a health problem my dog might have that makes him go? Please; I really love my dog and would be heart broken to see him be put in a shelter. If there’s a treatment that might cure him of this unfortunate habit, please tell me.

Bauser answers:

The poor thing might have worms. And it can be corrected with a simple medication. I would take him to the vet before getting rid of him.

Hi, my 8 months old puppy had a very watery diarrhea around 12 this afternoon. He had an appointment with the vet about an hour or so ago, but his heartbeat was normal and his temperature was normal as well. There was no blood in his diarrhea. The vet also pressed on his stomach to see if he was uncomfortable or in pain and he wasn’t. We left and got home five minutes later and about a minute or two after he stepped into the house he laid down for a few minutes before getting up and vomitting clear/white vomit. He’s up to date with his shots. Is this a very serious situation? We called the vet office and they said to give him ice and water because they couldn’t do anything now since we were just there. Do you think he will be ok? This is the first time he’s every had this kind of diarrhea and it is also the first time he ever vomited.

That is definitely not normal. It sounds like he got into something that he wasn’t supposed to. The main thing you have to worry about is if he gets dehydrated. You may have to take him to another vet and get I.V. fluids.
You are the only one who can decide that. You have to keep a very close eye on him.

I used to have a Shihtzu that threw up yellow bile about 2 times a week. She had 2 different medications that she took and 2 different dog foods mixed together for a special diet. This was for her whole life span. Your dog does not sound anything like that.
Keep a close eye on him and make sure he doesn’t get dehydrated. That is very serious if that happens.

    Good Luck.
